Reggae Rhythm Guitar -  Lesson Help

Reggae guitar has a unique feel and sound that needs to be practiced in a particular way to create an
authentic reggae feel. The sound of reggae could be described as a 'bouncing' sound. This is because the
main pulse of this style is played on the 'off-beat'. Watch the videos carefully, note that the technique
requires your picking hand to 'ghost'. This means that on beat 1 you will perform a downstroke but miss the
strings, on beat 2 you will catch the chord with and upstroke. it's this very technique that adds the unique
sound to this style. check the lessons for more detail on how to proceed through the rest of the bar. Check
out UB40's Red, Red Wine for a great example of this style.

A firm pick will produce nice results, your job being more of a time keeper than a busy guitar player. It's a
great test of a players ability to blend in with a band rather than to take a lead role.

Getting The Sound

A Fender Strat, tele of Jazzman will sound great through any good quality valve amp. set the channel to

clean and go for a cutting but pleasant sound. Try A Fender Twin valve amp.

Essential Listening

Anything by Bob Marley and UB40 would make great study material for this lesson.
